Apple Pie Pork Chops Recipe

What is Humphrey Bogart's favorite dinner? "Porkchops and appleshaush" - if you're too young to remember Peter Brady's corny joke, then at least you might appreciate this meal. I was craving pork chops and applesauce, but there was no applesauce in the house!
Of course, I know how to make it - simmer simmer, cinnamon, etc. But frankly, the apples I have aren't good enough for that kind of effort, and who has that kind of time?

So, I decided to throw some apple slices into the skillet with my pork chops, and kept spicing it up until Apple Pie Pork Chops were born:

Apple Pie Pork Chops
(cooking time ~20 minutes, makes 4 servings)
  • 4 Pork Chops
  • 1 apple (any variety)
  • 1 Tsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp allspice
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp brown sugar
Place chops in a large skillet on medium-low heat and begin cooking them. While they get started, core and finely slice the apple, leaving the skin on. When you flip the chops, toss the apples into the pan and allow them to simmer, adding lemon juice to the bottom of the pan.

Measure and add all of the spices, and mix well into the apples, around the pork chops.

Once the spices coat the apple slices, try not to stir them too much, you want the bottoms to carmelize against the bottom of the pan.

Continue to simmer until the pork chops are cooked all the way through when sliced in the center.

Serve chops with sliced apples - carmelized side up - laid over the chops. Pair with bright green vegetables. Photo above of dinner tonight includes half a baked potato and brussell sprouts!

Here's the nutrition information for 1 chop and 1/4 of the apple slices:

You are reminding me that my mother used to cook the apples just like this only in a separate pan. She flipped them and they were brown (carmelized) on both sides. She served them as a side dish to anything pork. I can taste them now as I sit here. Guess what I'm going to do with those 2 apples in the frig.
